You read that right, your uterus can fall out.

What is a prolapse?

Your pelvic floor is a bowl of muscles that sit at the bottom, the floor of your body. It makes the support that our organs sit on top of. A prolapse is when one or more of either your bladder, uterus and rectum start to apply pressure and fall out of your body. It is due to weak muscles and tissues in your pelvic area.

Men can also experience prolapse of the bladder and rectum.

There are three types of prolapses:

Cystocele- is a bladder prolapse. It’s when your bladder starts falling into the walls of your vaginal canal (the most common type of Prolapse).

Uterine Prolapse- When your uterus starts to fall out of your vagina.

Rectocele- When the walls of your rectum start to push into your vaginal canal and the walls of your perineum area.

Prolapse is common for women who have given vaginal birth, had bigger babies, gone through menopause and are ageing.

It is very common to have a prolapse (mostly for people who have given birth) but most cases are not symptomatic and don't require treatment.
