Performative activism (also known as performative wokeness or allyship) is basically shallow support of issues related to justice and equality. In other words, the insincere attempt to be ‘antiracist’ just to build one's credibility and support.

Performative activism is similar to the ‘white savior complex’, where a white person believes they are in a position of superiority to save a black person or a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) person or community.

The word ‘performance activism’ started circulating in 2020 after the murder of George Flyod and Beronna Taylor.

A clear example of performative activism is Rainbow Washing. Rainbow Washing is a marketing tactic that uses performative activism for commercial gain and profits. In the month of June, Pride Month which celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community and their pride- brands add rainbows to their logos or products to show their superficial support.
