Daisy Jones and the Six was written by Taylor Jenkins Reid in 2019.
Daisy Jones and the Six, for me, didn't just do the book justice but brought it to life.
The book is written in script, to mimic an interview taken by Billy and Camila’s child, a drawback of that is getting confused about who is who. Moreover, A band singing the song as a whole has a greater impact than merely reading the lyrics. In ‘Daisy Jones and the Six’ the songs tell the story.
The book could have done better:
In the book Warren’s character is misogynistic and sexist, always making comments about Camila, Daisy and Karen. In reality, Warren is a really likable person. He was easygoing, funny, and had one of the happiest and best lives, so I believe the misogyny could be removed from his character.
In the series, Camila followed her own path and worked as a photographer. She was the one who photographed Aurora's cover. However, Camila really lacked a niche in the book.
The book didn't truly explore sisterhood or the empowerment of women as a relevant theme, but the series shows how all the female characters support one another. It’s beautiful to watch what Camila says about Daisy at the end. The series is very ‘not-misogynistic’ and internalized misogyny free.
Simone didn't really have a storyline in the book other than being Daisy’s friend. In the series, Simone is a gay singer and we see her journey with music and her sexuality through the seventies.
The series could have done better:
Daisy’s fashion sense at the beginning of the series is very modern which doesn't reflect the depth of her character. While progressing in the series we do see her wearing mystical, fairy-like clothing with dark makeup which I believe represents her emotional state and personality more.
I fell in love with what Camila wore throughout the series. In the beginning, she wore these long beautiful dresses. Later, her fashion sense changes after the release of Aurora and she looks like a typical rich housewife.
I think they could have worked on Billy and Graham’s style, they both end up wearing similar things all the time and it doesn't showcase who they are as characters.
Karen in the book wears loose clothing to refuse to be sexualized by men. But, through the series we see her wearing more-fitted clothes, which I personally really like. In a scene, Karen goes to the beach with Graham and wears this floral-orange swimming costume that doesn't match her personality.
In my opinion, Warren is the best-dressed male character and Camila is the best-dressed female character.
In the book, Chuck dies in the Vietnam War and that pushes the band members to be successful for him. In the series, there is no mention of the Vietnam War and Chuck just leaves the band to pursue dentistry. This ignorance fails to represent the entirety of the era as the Vietnam War affected Americans greatly.
